Why rent a car in Albania at all?
Albania is a country built for driving. Its best moments — the hairpins of the Llogara Pass, the stone villages above Gjirokastër, a spontaneous swim at an unnamed beach south of Vlora, coffee in Voskopoja at 1,160 m — sit exactly where buses don't go. Intercity buses exist and are cheap, but they are slow, infrequent after mid-afternoon, and skip nearly everything worth a detour. With rental prices among the lowest in Europe, a car is the single highest-value purchase of an Albanian trip for most travelers.
What a rental car really costs in Albania
Prices swing hard with the season. The same Fiat Panda that costs €6 a day in February can cost €32 a day in the first week of August. These are realistic 2026 market rates across Albanian cities:

What you need to rent: documents and requirements
- Driving licence held for at least 1 year — EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian licences are accepted as-is.
- Passport or EU ID card for the rental contract.
- Minimum age 21 at most companies (18–20 sometimes possible with a surcharge — see our under-25 guide).
- No credit card required. Cash and debit cards are the norm; deposits are small (€50–150) or waived with full coverage.
An International Driving Permit is technically recommended for non-EU licences but is almost never requested when the licence is printed in the Latin alphabet.
Choosing the right car
The 90% answer: a small manual hatchback is the right car for Albania. It fits the narrow streets of Berat and Himara, parks anywhere in Tirana, and sips fuel that costs €1.60–1.80/litre. Insurance in plain language
Every rental includes third-party liability by law, and nearly all include a basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with an excess — typically €200–600 that you would owe in a worst case. Full Casco, usually €5–10/day at local companies, reduces that excess to zero and normally removes the deposit too. Where to pick up your car
You can collect a car in any major city — Tirana and the airport have the largest fleets and the best prices, followed by Durrës, Saranda, Vlora and Shkodra. Most companies also deliver to hotels and ports for free or a small fee. One-way rentals — pick up in Tirana, drop off in Saranda — cost €20–60 extra and pair perfectly with the coastal highway.
Driving in Albania: what to actually expect
Main roads are in good condition and improving every year; the Tirana–Durrës motorway and the A1 toward Kosovo are genuinely modern. Albanian driving style is assertive — expect flexible lane discipline in cities and overtaking on straights. Outside cities the real hazards are mundane: unlit roads at night, livestock near villages, and optimistic GPS estimates. Rules of thumb: add 30% to Google Maps times on mountain roads, fuel up before long rural stretches, and don't drive the mountains at night. Crossing borders with an Albanian rental
